1968: Rock the World made its World Premiere at Theatre Three. Our opening performances received unqualified standing ovations at both shows. I don't know how many of you have been in original productions, but it's an amazing process fraught with changes, rewrites, experimentation, etc. Then to see it come to life and get such a positive response...
well, needless to say, we're all very proud.
Jeffrey Sanzel and Ellen Michelmore did yeomen's work in creating this production and should be very proud of their accomplishment.
AND Don't forget, there's a Deb's Web special for you.
$10 - how can you not come?!

The role of MADAME ARCATI has been cast.
Charles Condomine - a writer (Clifton Webb type) & Ruth Condomine, his second wife. can be any age between mid-thirties and fifties. Don't take that to mean they're not attractive. They're intelligent, sophisticated, blessed with humor and, at least in the beginning, a little condescending when it comes to séances. They're also very comfortable with each other, at least until Elvira appears.
Elvira - Charles's first wife, brought back from the dead. A lively spirit, witty and full of humor, younger than Charles and Ruth (possibly she was younger than Charles even in life.) A foil for both Charles (who can see her) and Ruth (who can't, and has a hard time dealing with the reality).
Dr. Bradman & Mrs. Bradman. The Bradmans are a married couple anywhere between forty and death. Friends of Ruth and Charles. Amiable and good-humored.
Edith - the Condomines' maid. A legacy of sorts from Elvira to Ruth. Edith moves quickly, never standing still for long, as if she'd be shocked into action if she did. Turns out she has an important part to play in coping with Elvira

New York Comedy Club

I normally don't do these types of shows, but I figured it was worth it. Here is the deal - I need to bring 6 (six) people in order to be in the show. It's a good opportunity to be seen by three industry people (they really show up) and get some good work out of it. If you can make it - let me know. Them more people I bring, the more time I get on stage to impress these folks. $10 admission and two drink minimum. It's a good show, only good comics are invited. LET ME KNOW IF YOU CAN DO IT...

Sayville Young People’s Opera Workshop to present A Sondheim Salute and A Little Carousel
The evenings of August 12, 13 and 14 beginning at 7:30 p.m in the air-conditioned David M. Jones auditorium at the Sayville Middle School, the Sayville Young People’s Opera Workshop will present for its 13th annual summer workshop presentation a double-header. The first part of the evening's performance will be "A Sondheim Salute" featuring famous choruses, ensemble numbers, duets and solos from such Broadway hits by Stephen Sondheim as A Little Night Music, Sunday in the Park with George, Company, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and others. Then, after a brief intermission, SYPOW will present a condensed semi-concert version of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's classic operetta Carousel. Both of these presentations will be accompanied by the SYPOW orchestra celebrating its 5th outing.
Begun in 1995, SYPOW continues this year with its tradition of introducing young people from Nassau and Suffolk counties to the many forms of operatic and musical theatre endeavors. Previous productions have included such “mini-operas” as Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Medium and The Telephone and Samuel Barber’s A Hand of Bridge; operettas such as Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial by Jury, HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, and The Mikado, as well as Rick Besoyan’s Little Mary Sunshine and Sigmund Romberg and Oscar Hammerstein II's The New Moon; “rock” operas such as Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tin Rice's Jesus Christ, Superstar and the Who's Tommy; and legitimate operas such as Luc Plamondon and Richard Cocciante’s Notre Dame de Paris and W. A. Mozart's The Magic Flute.
Now, after a mere six weeks of rehearsal, over 60 area young people from both Nassau and Suffolk counties ranging in age from 12 to 25 will be ready to present these tributes to three of the giants of American operetta and musical theatre: Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II, and Stephen Sondheim. For further info go to http://sypow.tripod.com.

ONE PERSON'S (RE)VIEW
Peter Morrison at Clare Rose Playhouse
John Patrick Shanley calls his play, Doubt, a Parable, thereby establishing it as fiction with moral implications, highly relevant to the "facts" of our time. The issue is, of course, clerical abuse of minors, a reality that has caused dramatic changes in the attitudes of both believers and non-believers alike towards the hierarchy. However, Mr. Shanley does not travel the same route as other dramatizations of this problem. Do not expect the near diabolical abuse as depicted in films such as The Boys of St. Vincent or Faith of Our Fathers. In Doubt Shanley does not give us even a glimpse of the incidents under debate. The audience is left to conjecture as to "what happened" based on the reports, predispositions, and emotional outbursts of the principal characters. In this respect, Doubt is something of a mystery-thriller which substitutes "Exactly what did he do or not do?" for "Whodunnit?" A good director (and Sister Grace Rowland is without "doubt" a fine director), will preserve the ambiguity to the extent that the moral issues themselves, as well as the degree of guilt or innocence of the characters, become the focus. The actors have a closely related task to that of the director. They must have made up their minds well before rehearsal time as to the degree of guilt, innocence, good intentions, hidden motivations, destructive or sound theories embodied by their characters. Having decided on these qualities, they must also, with the guidance of the director, take into account and act out whatever changes or evolutions take place in the course of the play. Given the above demands, everyone in the Clare Rose production of Doubt shines.
I left Doubt profoundly shaken by its implications and highly impressed by the quality of the acting and directing which was capable of moving me so profoundly and causing me to think about the play for hours afterward. Sherry Mandery as Sister Aloysius Beauvier, Principal of St. Nicholas School, turns in a flawless performance which, from first word to last, gives the audience a detailed and complex portrait of this frighteningly dominating religious. Similarly, Ed Stever, who has proved himself in performance after performance, is fully immersed in the tortured and beleaguered character of Father Flynn. His portrayal nearly drains us by eliciting a combination of concern, affection, and protectiveness. Caught between the two main characters is Sister James, played with a satisfying mixture of good intentions, confusion, and finally righteousness by Stacey Smith, a gifted student in St. Joseph's Speech Communication Program. In altogether too short a scene for her enormous talent, NY actor Ingrid Griffith plays the mother of the twelve-year-old boy, never seen, but around which the action turns. Both her body and her exquisitely tempered vocal delivery allow us to see a social-domestic point of view somehow inaccessible to the other characters, with their more ecclesiastical concerns.
The Clare Rose Theater on the St. Joseph's Campus in Patchogue was almost filled last night with an audience whose often tense silences and finally resounding, prolonged applause testified to the success of this difficult play. I strongly encourage anyone interested in serious, challenging theater on LI to get there as soon as possible. The play runs through July 27.
Frank Tangredi at BroadHollow's Elmont Theatre
If you like terrific acting, you should see the current production of Lost in Yonkers at BroadHollow’s Elmont Theatre. The cast plays this strong piece the way it needs to be played: for keeps. These are real lives at stake, and Jeryl Ann Costello as Bella never lets you forget it. She’s heart-wrenching. Sonya Tannenbaum gets to the heart of Grandma in a performance unlike anything I’ve seen from her before. Gary Tifeld, too, gives a characterization far different from anything I’ve seen him do. And Laura Wallace-Rhodes was truly blessed to get two amazing young actors, Lucas Dean and William Rosenblum, for the grandsons. This is a production with heart and muscle. I loved it.
