McNicholl, director; Ray Cooney, playwright; Stephen DeAngelis, casting director. Rehearsals begin Jan 4 in Manhattan; runs Jan 21-Feb 21. Performance schedule is for  5 perfs/wk from Thurs-Sun. Performers of all ethnicities and Non-Union performers are strongly encouraged to attend. Auditioners are asked to prepare a comic monologue of their own choosing.  All characters speak in British dialect. Specifically RP. The “Britishness” of the show is an essential component of its humor. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect but we’d like to see if auditioners can get the basic sounds and music of it. SEEKING:
JOHN SMITH: Male; 28-40, a taxi driver who has two wives, one in each town; the Protagonist;  described as "ordinary" but must have great charm, wit, a sense of urgency without being manic; crack comic timing, an gift for physical comedy;
STANLEY GARDNER: Male; 28-40; John’s unemployed best friend and neighbor; the comic sidekick; bright energy; says the wrong thing under pressure in an attempt to "help."; well-meaning but excitable; excellent physical comedian needed;
BARBARA SMITH: Female; late 20s-30s;  John’s wife in Streatham; cute, frisky, scantily clad kitty, yet must have terrific comic timing; the physical requirements are less important than the acting ability, which is paramount;
MARY SMITH: Female; late 20s-30s; John’s wife in Wimbledon; nurturer; can be firm with her husband; responsible, doting, but eminently attractive and likable;
DETECTIVE SERGEANT TROUGHTON: Male (but also might consider a Female if she is convincing); 35-45; a slightly severe, proper detective; not a pushover, but not belligerent, either;  keeps the pressure on our hero;
DETECTIVE SERGEANT FRANKLIN: Male; 40s-50s; a middle-aged family man; diplomatic; unaware of how funny he is; BOBBY FRANKLYN: Male; 20s-50s; dress designer; very effeminate; outrageous but only when justified by the situation;  entirely serious about what he does; acting skill is paramount, not simply attitude;  think a British Roger Debris from “The Producers”.
If unable to attend, send picture and resume to Stephen DeAngelis, c/o Grey nyc, 777 Third Ave, 10 Fl, NY, NY 10017, ATTN: “RUN FOR YOUR WIFE”. For more info on the theater, go to www.engemantheater.com.

Dominique Bouchard, Casting Director
New “SECRET” game show, HONEY, PLEASE!, from the producers of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and The Newlywed Game is looking for unique couples/families with LOTS of personality (we’re looking for really FUN and ADVENTUROUS people).  Contestants will open-up their homes and pick an UNKNOWING teammate in their family (husband/wife,  fiancé, boyfriend/girlfriend, children) to be their accomplice in this hilarious challenge of wit and task (CASTING IN NY/NJ ONLY AND YOU MUST LIVE TOGETHER).  The show is a fun, lighthearted, comedic, hidden camera show, where you have to convince your UNKNOWING teammate to complete several tasks. And the tasks are things they would not normally do, i.e. laundry, a fitness work out tape, making you dinner, giving you a back massage, spending time with the family, taking care of the pets etc. (the weirder the better).  For every task he or she completes, you win cash and prizes. As the tasks get progressively harder, the cash and prizes increase. You can win $12K+ in CASH and PRIZES!! BUT your secret teammate has no idea they are being filmed or competing (you will be disqualified if you don’t keep it confidential, so don’t tell your secret teammate or anyone that would tell them…including kids)!
Please contact us ASAP.  To get more info and to apply for the show email: casting.honeyplease@gmail.com

MEMBER TO MEMBER

To the Deb's Web Community:
   Many of you have worked with my husband Matt Langen or me (Jen Hope). Sadly, our current financial situation has made it so we can no longer afford to live in our apartment. We are probably going to be evicted sometime between December of this year and January of next year. We have only 800 dollars a month in unemployment, though I have the potential to make more if we can find a place to live where I can also continue to teach voice (students= extra money for rent).
    As many of you know, it is very, very difficult to find a room or apartment when you are not employed, even harder so when you are  a couple (why does nobody want couples?), and harder still when you have a cat and work mostly out of your home.
    I have many pending contracts with Broadhollow which also bring in some money, though we owe a lot of it to LIPA and creditors and such. I guess we are not the ideal tenants for anybody but serious theatre lovers with some extra space and huge hearts.
    I am hoping to find us a situation where Matt and I can continue to reside together with our extremely loveable cat Bigfoot, and where I can continue to teach my students so that I can offer more money as rent and continue to guide the careers of young artists on Long Island.
    If that doesn’t work out, I am seeking a separate place to teach lessons hopefully close to wherever we might end up living, and maybe near a train? (I don’t drive and we don’t own a car anyway). The last thing I want to give up is our cat but we may also be seeking a loving foster home for him where he can remain an indoor cat.
    What we can offer you: a wealth of theater resources including but not limited to over 500 musical theater scores and scripts, and a rabid knowledge of and passion for all things theater related, as well as free lessons (vocal, audition coaching, and if you want to learn how to use computer programs to edit and compile sound, we can help you there as well.) And an eternity of gratitude.
    If this doesn’t work out, I still want to thank you for taking the time to read this, and I have enjoyed living and working here immensely.
    Here’s hoping I won’t have to head for my friend’s garage in New Jersey, or back onto another minivan to tour the Midwest yet again (I love you Midwesterners, but if I have to spend even one more day surveying armadillo roadkill I may go mad!)
   Much thanks,
   Jen Hope, Matt Langen, and Bigfoot jenhopediva@yahoo.com

Attn: Northport High School Choir Alumni who studied under Sandy Valerio:
We are having a reunion concert with the current Northport HS Choir on Tues, Dec 22, 8pm. Rehearsal will be the night before; Mon, Dec 21 at 8pm-? This will be to promote the Tim Valerio Scholarship fund that the school is setting up this year in honor of Sandy’s son who died tragically in a motorcycle accident this past Spring. More info to follow.  NPT is setting up a page on their site that will have the music we’ll be singing in downloadable PDFs and other general info about the rehearsal and concert. Since the school has “gone green” they will not do mailings to the alumni so it’s up to us to generate as much word of mouth about this as possible to fellow alumni. TRIVIA DEPARTMENT

FILM

Peter David asks..Can you name this film?
An Oscar nominated director had the curious distinction of directing, in an acting role, the director who beat him out the previous year for the Best Director Oscar, and whose film likewise trumped that same Oscar nominated director's film for the Best Film Oscar.  Name the two directors and the film they made together and, for bonus points, the nominated and winning films of the previous year.

THEATER

Peter Morrison asks...
This man began as costume designer, choreographer, director, and leading character in this show, which everyone connected with thought would close after opening night. Instead, the show ran for four years, but the man in question ended by losing then regaining his directing role, losing his job as choreographer and losing his role as a leading actor in the show. Who is the man and what is the show?
Bonuses: *Name the Julliard graduate who wrote music and lyrics for the show.
              **Who replaced the director in the acting role?
              ***Who replaced him as choreographer?

THIS WEEK IN BROADWAY HISTORY

Nov. 6, 1988 - Robin Williams and Steve Martin star in Samuel Beckett's "Waiting For Godot," which The Wall Street Journal calls "surprisingly, demoralizingly average."

Nov. 7, 1951 - After Phil Silvers takes his curtain call in "Top Banana," one of the show's investors, Milton Berle, walks out on stage dressed like Silvers and takes his own bows - fair turnabout as Berle is satirized in the show.

Nov. 7, 1963 - A diet and a lack of food catch up with Zero Mostel, who collapses during intermission of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" and is unable to complete the performance.

Nov. 10, 1920 - George Bernard Shaw's anti-war "Heartbreak House" has its American premiere.

Nov. 10, 1936 - Leslie Howard begins a short run in "Hamlet."

Nov. 10, 1942 - Katharine Hepburn stars in Philip Barry's new comedy, "Without Love," and later goes on to star in the movie version with Spencer Tracy
.
Nov. 10, 1970 - Danny Kaye returns to Broadway after a nearly three-decade absence in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "Two By Two."

Nov. 11, 1937 - A 22-year-old Orson Welles appears in "Julius Caesar."

Nov. 11, 1971 - Neil Simon's "The Prisoner of Second Avenue" opens with Peter Falk, Lee Grant and Vincent Gardenia.

Nov. 11, 1982 - Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy team up in "Foxfire." Keith Carradine co-stars.

Nov. 11, 1990 - Nigel Hawthorne and Jane Alexander are paired in "Shadowlands."

Nov. 12, 1951 - James Barton and Olga San Juan star in the twice-delayed opening of Lerner and Loewe's "Paint Your Wagon."

Nov. 12, 1967 - Pearl Bailey sings the title song in "Hello, Dolly!" which opens with Cab Calloway as well. Carol Channing attends, too, and is invited on stage by Bailey to sing the song that made her famous.

A Midsummer Nights’ Dream in Winter? Yes please!  In director Katherine M. Carter’s energetic new staging of Shakespeare’s most beloved romantic comedy, follow four young lovers into a colorful and mysterious forest where fairies Titania and Oberon rule, where a band of “rude mechanicals”, led by the hilarious Bottom, rehearse a play and where love is put to the test by the mischievous Puck.  In the end, will the lovers end up with their correct mate? Will the mechanicals make it to their performance before the Duke? Is Titania doomed to love an ass?  A Midsummer Nights Dream is a non-stop comedy that will warm you up in the cold winter months.

A Long Island native who has gone on to become an internationally respected and popular guitarist and entertainer, who was fondly known locally as Little Toby Walker, a unique, accomplished, finger-style guitar virtuoso. He is adept at blues, rags, hot country picking, and coaxes more out of a guitar than anyone can imagine. He is a skilled singer and songwriter who draws inspiration from traditional and contemporary music. Toby takes that musical foundation and creates something uniquely his own and has been eagerly received in various venues including concert halls, festivals
and coffeehouses throughout the U.S., England and Europe.  Walker’s passion for blues, rag, folk, and other traditional American music drove him to head for the Mississippi Delta, Virginia, and the Carolinas, where he tracked down some of the more obscure - but immensely talented - music makers of an earlier era. He learned directly at the feet of legends such as Eugene Powell, James "Son" Thomas, Etta Baker, and R.L Burnside, among others.  The talent, passion, and soul of a Toby Walker performance reflects these travels. Whether it is telling the humorous and heartwarming tales of
other masters, talking about his inspirations, or astounding you with his musical mastery, his performances are a feast for the senses. The audience is moved in ways that delight them long after the encores. Make no mistake - Toby Walker is to be experienced live.

ONE PERSON'S (RE)VIEW

ed. at Bare Bones
Arthur Miller and I graduated from the same high school,  Abraham Lincoln in Brooklyn.  Considered by many to be The USA's greatest playwright, Mr. Miller has given us a portrait of second generation Sicilian-Americans in his deeply emotional, almost operatic, A View From the Bridge.  Upon entering the Posey School, where Bare Bones performs, a wide open space above store in Northport Village, the audience was transported to Red Hook where one can see the Brooklyn Bridge (beautifully painted by Ed O'Hara).  Attention was paid to every detail despite the limited performance space including "I" beams and other bridge construction effects.  The small Carbone apt sat behind the "street" playing area where people of the neighborhood passed by not knowing the drama playing out within.  Superbly directed by Jeff Bennett, the players displayed a knowledge of the story and the angst surrounding Eddie Carbone (Will Mercado), his forbidden attraction to the niece (Azadeh Hashemkhani) he has raised, his long-suffering wife (Christine Copley) and the two illegal immigrant cousins from Italy (John Cassidy & John Dorcic) who Eddie ultimately betrays.  Though the raw emotion was sometimes a little overpowering in the limited space, the story was told by the cast and made comprehensible to the audience through the use of a theater device in in the form of Eddie's Lawyer/Narrator Mr. Alfieri (Larry Chorowski).   If you missed this production, please make an effort to see the next production by this company.  When they say Bare Bones they mean the space not the talent.  This was the fourth I've seen and I have yet to be disappointed.

ed. at Smithtown Center
It's difficult for me to be objective about this production as I watched it through rehearsals (transporting John to and from), but I can say that Jekyll & Hyde is getting top notch treatment here. Though it has had its share of injuries, John's the most serious among them, the cast goes forth.  Let me start by saying that the set is wonderful as are the lighting, sound and costume designs.  The vocal prowess of this cast is up to the task of this modern opera of the classic tale of good vs. evil.  Steve McCoy has done a superb job of recruiting the right voices for appropriate roles.  Bob Butterly captures the essence of both characters in his singing and acting capacities as do all the leads and supporting characters.  The ensemble is just incredible!  Most impressive is the touching and edgy portrayal of Lucy by Amanda Passanante.  In addition to being in the show, I've seen a lot of productions and this lady is just terrific. Finally, I must compliment Cara Brown and her fine orchestra.  If you're a fan of the show (I am) you will be delighted.  You have this weekend and next to catch it and I suggest that you do.
