THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

A conscience is what hurts when all your other parts feel so good. - Anonymous

SUNSHINE/STORMY WEATHER

From Charles L. Bandler
The Second Chance Players and the Long Island Theatre Community suffered a profound loss this past weekend with the passing of Charlie Johnson.  I had the pleasure and privilege of directing Charlie in 3 shows for the Second Chance Players: You Can't Take It With You (Head G-Man) in 2006; A Christmas Carol - Radio Show (Donation Solicitor) for the Port Jefferson Dickens Festival, in 2007; and The Man Who Came To Dinner (Professor Metz) in 2008.  Eric Young, Charlie and I frequently went to diners after rehearsals.  Despite the difference in our ages, Charlie was a contemporary to Eric and me.  His sense of humor made for a delightful way to end a long, and sometimes stressful, day.  Charlie's wisdom has made an impact on my life, and still does.  His love for all those around him was evident, and that love was returned to him.  Charlie's humor, wisdom and unconditional love of those whose lives he touched is his legacy.  He will be sorely missed.

Music for Miracles - Your chance to make a difference [ed. - we'll be there]
LI Performers, Jack and Maureen (aka Marenne) Green are dedicating themselves to a village in Guatemala, La Joya, which they learned about through an NGO, non-profit charity called Miracles In Action. Some months ago Deb's Web ran this link http://www.youtube.com:80/watch?v=sIsqW8Mztv8. They also collected supplies for the students, teachers and classrooms. The dedication took place on Jan 20. As is customary, they were invited to some of the homes to meet the rest of the families and what they saw  upset them so much that they have committed themselves to raising enough money to supply each of the families (52 in all)  with ventilated stoves and filtered water purifiers.  (The soot and ash in their one-room dwellings was disgusting and incredibly unhealthy.  The cisterns are just catch basins for the rain water.  The water is loaded with parasites and bacteria.)  Maureen has been selling Mayan jewelry and handicrafts in Florida. However, there is a need to raise more money so they are having a concert/party fundraiser on July 19th from 3-6pm. Jerry (guitarist) and Michele (flutist) Saulter volunteered to provide beautiful music and the Greens are providing the wine, tapas, games and raffle prizes. They would love to see you all and have you become "miracle workers" by attending. Penny Rambacher, Miracles In Action founder, is the guest speaker.  [She's the female Greg Mortenson Three Cups of Tea  in Guatemala.] 100% of all donations go to help the poorest of the poor in sustainable development projects: schools, water filters, water systems, nutrition , ventilated ovens, libraries, medical, handicraft workshops, teacher training (most of the teachers are lucky to have gotten through 9th grade.)  The only "staff " is volunteers as well as the board.  It's an amazing charity!  By the way, each stove costs $100 and each water filter costs $37.  They literally save lives.  If you can come, either call 631-363-8698 to RSVP or go to Evite and let the Greens know you'll be there. http://www.evite.com/pages/invite/viewInvite.jsp?inviteId=IVJJENVZAGTFPLPYVGUD&li=iq&src=email&trk=aei6

From Michele DiPaolo
For the very first time, I will be participating in the annual 4th of July sidewalk art show, Artists on the Lane, in Bellport Village, an event sponsored by the South Bay Art Association.  I will be there with my photographs in my own little “booth”.  If you intend to be in town that day, please stop by and say hello.  Dozens of artists line both sides of Bellport Lane with little white canopies, and it’s a lovely, leisurely stroll down "the lane". whether you’re interested in purchasing art work or just browsing.  Refreshments will be sold by the Bellport Garden Club under the blue tent on the lawn of the Post Crowell House, so you can plan on lunching there as well.  Hope to see you on the 4th. [ed. Don't forget to stop in to the Brookhaven Arts & Humanities Phoenix Art Gallery on Main St as well.]

The story concerns the eccentric Dr. Baliardo, a royal scientist with a penchant for astronomical phenomena who, fearing for the virtue of his beautiful young daughter and her equally lovely cousin, locks them away from the world.  With the help of some wily servants, the girls dupe their overprotective guardian into believing that two emissaries from the Court of the Moon (actually their suitors in disguise) have fallen in love with them.  Mistaken identities, multiple disguises, narrow escapes, subterfuge, trickery, fights, and a few “men in the moon” add up to a wild, wonderful, sci-fi musical farce, perfect for an evening under the stars.

WLIU, a member of National Public Radio and Public Radio International, and Bay Street are thrilled to announce a new series to take place Tuesdays at 4pm at Bay Street. Beginning July 14, the series kicks off with the well-known voices of WLIU’s Ed German and Brian Cosgrove. These hour-long live broadcasts from the Long Wharf  in Sag Harbor will allow for audiences  to see how a professional radio station records a live program, and will include an audience participation portion during some of the sessions. WLIU is one of the few remaining radio stations in the US committed to a strong program schedule of jazz, rhythm and blues, world music and music from Broadway. This makes for a synergistic programming opportunity with Bay Street. The broadcasts continue on July 21 with Bonnie Grice, July 28 with Ann Liguori, August 18 with Connie Conway, and August 25 with a host yet to be determined.  One additional broadcast will take place on Saturday morning, August 1st at 11am where Tracie Hotchner’s DOG TALK will be featured. Sponsored by Platinum Performance, Tracie will discuss the latest on dog and cat nutrition, followed by a Q&A and a book signing of THE DOG BIBLE & THE CAT BIBLE. Tickets for all broadcasts are $20 and available only through Bay Street.

ONE PERSON'S (RE)VIEW

ed. at Hofstra
If you didn't attend, you missed an outrageously amazing performance by Broadway Star and Hofstra Alum, James Barbour.  Barbour, who played Billy Bigelow in the '94 Lincoln Center revival of Carousel [ed.- I saw that!], Sydney Carton in A Tale of Two Cities, and Rochester in Jane Eyre (to name but a few),  brought his magnificent baritone voice to the John Cranford Adams Playhouse for a one night only scholarship benefit concert.  Mr. Barbour immediately built a rapport with the audience with his theatrical anecdotes and then wowed us all with some familiar and some not-so-familiar Broadway showtunes.  All were magnificently sung, despite his 13 hour return flight from London the day before, where he finished taping the PBS version of A Tale of Two Cities for an upcoming PBS Pledge Drive.   Thank you, thank you, thank you!  We loved every minute of the performance.  It was definitely worth the 2hr round trip.

...how about you?
